Hawthorn forward Cyril Rioli has been named the Norm Smith Medallist from the 2015 Grand Final after an emphatic performance in the first term that helped set up the Hawks’ third premiership in a row.
Rioli might not have finished with the same kind of numbers as many of his Hawthorn teammates but it was his work to give Hawthorn an advantage early that clearly caught the eyes of the judges.
Rioli kicked two goals for the game, both of them in the first term, and also set up a goal for teammate Brad Hill late in the first term.
He finished with a total of four goal assists from the game to go with eighteen disposals and twelve marks – two of those contested, five inside 50 – and his two goals.
Rioli finished with a total of 13 votes in the Norm Smith Medal voting, considered best on ground by three of the five members of the panel.
Sam Mitchell was his closest rival with a total of seven votes, coming off of 34 disposals and six clearances – the best on ground for the Hawks in both categories – and two goal assists.
Former Demon James Frawley also polled well with six votes as he blanketed Coleman Medallist Josh J Kennedy, keeping him to just a single behind for the day.
Luke Hodge received two votes for his thirty disposals and a goal, while Shaun Burgoyne (26 disposals) and Isaac Smith (23 disposals and 3 goals) also picked up single votes.
Rioli was priced at $17 to win the medal ahead of the Grand Final.
