Melbourne United have started the 2015-16 NBL season with five straight wins to be on top of the ladder. Star guard Chris Goulding has had a big say in that so far this season.

The 27-year-old signed a one-year deal with United for the season and is averaging 17.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 4 assists a game. His efforts late in the game against the Taipans on Saturday night made sure that United were undefeated heading into a clash against his former team the Perth Wildcats on Thursday night.

Goulding dominated the contest, finishing with 26 points and 3 assists in 35 minutes of action. But it was a big steal and a basket that sent United on their way to being undefeated which set the game alight.

While Goulding is looking forward to taking on his former team he understands the Wildcats will come to play this Thursday.

“I think traditionally any time Melbourne plays Perth it’s a hell of a battle,” Goulding said.

“They are going to be equally fired up whether they had beat Townsville and stayed undefeated or lost to Townsville which is what happened.

“It won’t add any extra spice to the game, that’s already there.

“They’ve been the benchmark in this competition for the last decade or so and we understand the task at hand and look forward to them coming into our home.”

Goulding played NBA summer league in 2014 for Dallas Mavericks and then signed with Zaragoza and averaged 8.6 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1 assist.

The Australian Boomer representative started his career with the Brisbane Bullets until they folded at the end of the 2007-08 season. He then joined the Perth Wildcats in 2008 and played the season before taking his talents to the Gold Coast Blaze, where he joined up with former Bullets coach Joey Wright.

Gold Coast Blaze decided to withdraw from the NBL in August 2012 and he decided to sign with the Melbourne Tigers on a one-year deal. He re-signed with the Tigers for two more seasons and also played NBA summer league with Cleveland Cavaliers before joining the Dallas Mavericks former summer league 2014.

With Goulding setting the bar high this season, United will be hard to beat for the ultimate NBL prize.
