Every sports fan has thought about hitting the game winner before the buzzer sounds. On Saturday it became reality for Cairns Taipans guard Markel Starks.

The import’s late three pointer, with just 0.3 seconds remaining, sank the hometown crowd and the 36ers at Titanium Security Arena in Adelaide.

The end score read Cairns Taipans 104 – Adelaide 36ers 101.

The 24-year-old had a season-high 27 points and calmly dropped the three pointer to break the deadlock late in the game to stun the big crowd who turned up to watch this amazing contest.

In a game that ebbed and flowed through out the night, the Taipans prevailed and kept their season alive.

A Georgetown graduate, Starks is enjoying a fine start to the season, averaging 11 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists a game.

The 188-centimetre guard, who signed with the Taipans in August 2015 after spending time playing for the Detroit Pistons and the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2014 NBA Summer League, has fitted into the Taipans’ system perfectly, showing leadership, poise and the ability to drag his team over the line.

It has been an incredible start to the 2015-16 NBL season, and the game in Australia has never been in such a great position with the on-court product the best it has ever been.
