Roly Bonevacia scored two and dominated the midfield in a MOTM performance against Adelaide, with Wellington Phoenix comfortably beating the Reds’ 4-2 at Westpac Stadium.
Adelaide started the game strong, with Craig Goodwin scoring the first goal of the match within the opening ten minutes. However, Osama Malik was caught off guard just 30 seconds after the restart, allowing Krishna to get in behind and cruise around John Hall, levelling the scores almost immediately
Wellington then went ahead through Bonevacia, and didn’t look back, with the Dutchman getting his second after the break, and substitute Matthew Ridenton making it four with 15 minutes remaining.
Substitute Pablo Sanchez scored a consolation goa for Adelaide to make the scores more appropriate to the performance, but the Reds’ still deserved to lose as they continue to struggle in front of goal.
Final Score: Wellington Phoenix 4-2 Adelaide United
Adelaide United will look to end a dour winless streak in their A-League campaign when they come up against a fluctuating Wellington Phoenix side at Westpac Stadium on Friday afternoon. Join The Roar from 5:15pm (AEDT) for live scores and coverage.
It’s no secret that Adelaide United have struggled so far this season. They sit on the bottom of the ladder with just two points, though they certainly aren’t alone.
Joining them at the bottom is Perth Glory and the Central Coast Mariners on three and four points respectively.
Whilst they have struggled to get off to a good start, Adelaide can still turn their season around.
United Lynchpin Isaias stated midweek that the Reds’ misfortunes come down to basic errors, rather than the change in style from coach Guillermo Amor.
“Big mistakes in attack and defence (are costing us). We keep working, keep trusting in this style and this team, and keep working.”
However, it’s clear that the current style adopted by Amor is hurting the team. The possession stats no longer favour Adelaide as greatly as they did under Josip Gombau, and the attacking threat of Sergio Cirio and Craig Goodwin is rendered useless with long, searching balls.
Favouring the Reds, though, is the loss of key players for Wellington to international duty. Tom Doyle, Michael McGlinchey, Alex Rufer and Louis Fenton are all missing, opening the door for several young players to impress. Justin Gulley should get another chance at left back, with Alex Rodriguez and Matthew Ridenton stepping in for McGlinchey.
Not too many changes are expected from Amor, which allows United to gel in the key areas on the pitch. Adelaide are still without Eugene Galekovic, Iacopo La Rocca and Eli Babalj due to injury.
Roly Bonevacia will need to step up and perform in the absence of Michael McGlinchey, whilst Isaias, Jimmy Jeggo and Marcelo Carrusca all need to perform big to lift Adelaide from the bottom of the table.
Prediction: I expect a strong performance from Wellington in attack, and a dominating display from Sarpong and Krishna against the struggling United defence.
