Striker Roy Krishna believes patience will be key for the Wellington Phoenix attack against A-League leaders the Melbourne Victory in Auckland.

The Phoenix will head to QBE Stadium on Saturday night backing up from a 0-0 draw away to Sydney FC, when they had six shots at goal, but none on target, although they did hit the woodwork.

Krishna says there were plenty of positives from the performance, but concedes the Phoenix will have to be more clinical up front against the Victory.

“Our defence was really good and we didn’t conceded any goals, but we need to improve in attack,” he said.

“Our midfield and our strikers just need to be patient with the ball. We’ve been working on that and hopefully at the weekend it’s going to work out.”

The stalemate with Sydney meant the Phoenix began the latest round seventh on the table, but only five points adrift of the Victory.

While they drew a blank at Allianz Stadium, they remained in the top half of the competition for goals scored with 12, three of them from Krishna.

The livewire Fiji international is back in familiar surroundings as he prepares to face the Victory.

The 28-year-old spent six years in Auckland with Waitakere United and then Auckland City before moving south to join the Phoenix early 2014.

Krishna played in the Phoenix’s fixture in Auckland last season, scoring late against the Central Coast Mariners at Eden Park to rescue a 1-1 draw in a contest the home side dominated.

Now into his second full season, he’s enjoying life in the A-League.

“I’m starting regularly and it’s a good sign for me,” he said.

“My fitness has gone up and I’ve gelled with the boys really well.”
