Match Result:

Its a famous victory for Newcastle! Their third Premier League win of the season comes at home against a much-fancied Liverpool side who were yet to lose away under manager Jurgen Klopp.

Following a tame first half where chances were at a premium, the game opened up in the second stanza. The goals eventually came care of some wonderful work from the Magpies’ record signing Giorginio Wijnaldum.

A Martin Skrtel own goal broke the deadlock on 69 minutes as the Dutchman weaved some magic around the box, earning the assist following the deflection of the Slovakian past Simon Mignolet and into his own net. Some anxious minutes followed for the home side as they looked to hold on for three points.

Perhaps the most controversial moment of the match saw Alberto Moreno wrongly flagged offside as he put the ball in the net with a wonderfully volleyed finish. It will go down as what could have been for Liverpool as Wijnaldum popped up again to seal their fate in stoppage time.

He was put through one on one with Mignolet and made no mistake, producing an exquisite chipped finish into the far corner to seal the points for the Geordies.

Its a deserved victory for Newcastle and one that Steve McClaren will be hoping spurs their run out of the drop zone.

Fulltime:
Newcastle – 2
Liverpool – 0

Match Preview:

Newcastle welcome Liverpool to St James’ Park. Can Steve McClaren’s side break their slump in form and halt Jurgen Klopp’s honeymoon period on Merseyside? Join The Roar from 3am (AEDT) for all the action.

Klopp and his rejuvenated Reds are in the midst of a purple patch, which has seen them record crucial league wins against Manchester City and Swansea in recent weeks.

Additionally, their midweek dismantling of Southampton in the League Cup displayed their capabilities in the final third when perpetually injured striker Daniel Sturridge takes his spot in the side – the Englishman scored two of Liverpool’s goals in the 6-1 victory at St Mary’s Stadium.

Liverpool have risen to sixth in the league, just six points adrift of league leaders Manchester City, as well as a meagre four points from Champions League positions.

The Merseysiders will be looking for a routine victory here to continue their tilt towards the upper echelon of the Premier League.

Liverpool’s opponents have had almost the inverse fortune in the Premier League. McClaren’s men have won just one of their last five matches in England’s top tier, with that solitary victory coming against an equally languishing Bournemouth side at a slender 1-0 margin.

The Geordies are 19th on the Premier League table, with a measly 10 points from their opening 14 fixtures. On average they are conceding just over two goals a game, shipping 30 goals all up to be the equal-worst defence in the league.

In the past 10 league fixtures between the two, the Reds have emerged victorious in five, while their opponents have grabbed maximum points three times, with two draws. However, in the corresponding fixture last season, the Magpies secured victory off the boot of Ayoze Perez, despite accruing just 35 per cent of possession.

Liverpool’s injury list has shortened in recent weeks, with the return of stars such as Sturridge and Jordan Henderson. However, the likes of Joe Gomez, Mamadou Sakho, Jon Flanagan, and Danny Ings remain sidelined with long-term injuries. Additionally, Emre Can will miss this match through suspension, while Philippe Coutinho is in doubt.

Newcastle’s injury woes have taken their toll already this season. They remain without Tim Krul, Massadio Haidara, Steven Taylor, Michael Williamson, Gabriel Obertan, Cheick Tiote, Rolando Aarons and Emanuel Riviere.

Prediction
Newcastle 0-3 Liverpool
