Match Result

Adelaide win it at the death, overcoming their rivals 2-1 in a well-fought battle, despite a courageous comeback from Sydney FC in the second half. The Sky Blues were forced to play the majority of the match with 10 men as Gersbach was rightly sent off in the 28th minute for a horrid challenge on Goodwin.

However, the scores were still 0-0 at half time with Sydney defending well and Adelaide not doing enough with the possession they had. James Jeggo then fired Adelaide into the lead with a stunning goal early in the second half, before Holosko quickly found an answer at the other end to level the scores once more.

With several bad offside calls against Adelaide in the first half, they finally secured the lead they deserved through a penalty in the 94th minute. Marcelo Carrusca finished neatly from the spot to give the Reds their second consecutive win of the season.

Final Score: Adelaide United 2-1 Sydney FC

Despite sitting third on the table, Sydney FC are yet to hit peak form, and will have to dig deep again this week without skipper and marquee striker Alex Brosque.

Graham Arnold is positive that out-of-favour winger Filip Holosko can do the job in the absence of their captain, however his current run of form suggests otherwise.

Holosko has just two goals to his name in nine appearances for Sydney. In last week’s fixture alone he had five clear opportunities to score and couldn’t finish any.

With one of the more fearsome midfields in the A-League, Sydney need to start converting their possession and domination into victories.

Adelaide United are in a similar position – they constantly dominate games, though seem to have lost some of their ferocity and ruthlessness from the Josep Gombau era.

Their first win of the season came last week, with Pablo Sanchez scoring a crucial goal early in the match. For his first start of the season, his involvement, along with Marcelo Carrusca, was pivotal. However, there is still an element missing from Adelaide’s game that they had with Gombau.

It takes time for things to gel under a new coach, but a run of good form is needed for Guillermo Amor to feel safe in his position. If Adelaide cannot build on last week’s victory, it may be the end for the ex-Barcelona man.
