Just two weeks ago, Adelaide United were winless in eight, anchored to the bottom of the A-League ladder, and questions were being asked about Guillermo Amor’s job security. How times have changed.

Adelaide are now on a two-match winning streak, and have conceded just one goal from open play in the last four matches – quite a change from the 14 goals conceded in the previous four matches.

The Reds are looking much more solid defensively, with Jordan Elsey making the most of his run in the team at the expense of Osama Malik.

Elsey, 21, came on as a substitute for the injured Malik after just seven minutes in a 0-0 draw with Newcastle at the end of November, and Adelaide have defended much better as a unit since.

They have also improved going forward, with Pablo Sanchez and Marcelo Carrusca making good of their returns to the starting 11, scoring the decisive goal in the wins over Perth and Sydney respectively.

Adelaide’s turn of form is all too familiar, as Josep Gombau took ten games to notch his first two wins at the club when he took over in 2013. After Gombau’s second win, the Reds lost just one of the next nine fixtures, including wins over the eventual top three of that season, Brisbane Roar, Western Sydney Wanderers and Central Coast Mariners.

However, the Reds face a different test this weekend in a Newcastle Jets side who are without a win in six and desperate for all three points.
