Match Result

It was a match that promised goals, but never really delivered. Adelaide United had the better of the chances, but ultimately both sides will walk away disappointed in another scoreless draw.

Adelaide United had the better chances, with Marcelo Carrusca striking the woodwork twice from freekicks. Djite had a good chance late in the match, and Cirio and Goodwin also had several chances between them, however Mark Birighitti was back to his best and earnt Newcastle a point tonight in front of their home crowd.

Ryan Kitto and David Carney were both lively for the Jets when in attack, but Trifunovic once again failed to impress in front of goal, with several great chances squandered by the big centre forward.

Adelaide’s start to the season saw new coach Guillermo Amor coming under heavy scrutiny, with an eight-match winless streak.

However, now with two wins on the bounce, the former Barcelona player can build on some much-needed momentum to force his way up the A-League ladder.

Up against Newcastle for the second time this season, Adelaide will fancy their chances of taking home the points against a struggling Jets squad.

These two sides came up against each other in November, though they couldn’t be separated as the match ended 0-0. Jimmy Jeggo and Craig Goodwin were both lively back in Round 7, and were again instrumental last week against Sydney FC, with Jeggo scoring a fantastic goal in the second half.

Newcastle’s strong defence has been dealt a blow with news of Right Back Lee Ki-Je joining K-League side Ulsan Hyundai mid-week. This opens the door for youngster Nick Cowburn, whose in experience will be put to the text against either Sergio Cirio or Craig Goodwin.

This is a huge loss for Newcastle, whose defensive structure this season was the only reason they sat so high on the ladder during the first few rounds. This structure has started to fail them in recent weeks, and will be all the more vulnerable tonight.

With Newcastle failing to record a win in their last six attempts, they need something to change, though Scott Miller doesn’t seem to be the man to spark such change. He is credited with creating a strong defence at the Hunter Stadium, though his tactics going forward aren’t anything special.

Milos Trifunovic, Enver Alivodic, David Carney and Leonardo take up the four attacking positions for the Jets, and have an average age of 31.25. While there’s plenty of creativity and experience among them, their lack of speed on the counter does not help Miller’s defensive tactics.

Prediction
Adelaide with plenty of possession, though once again will fail to do much with it. Reds to win 2-0; goals coming from the left flank.
