An incredible diving catch by Andre Russell and a polished 56 not out by George Bailey were the highlights as Hobart Hurricanes made 6-163 against Sydney Thunder in their BBL clash at Bellerive Oval.

West Indies all-rounder Russell had a modest return of 0-40 with the ball but he snaffled two catches including a 10th-over screamer to send big-hitting Dan Christian (5) to the sheds.

Christian had launched a withering shot off the bowling of Fawad Ahmed (1-32) only for Russell to fly horizontally at deep cover and snare one of the summer’s best catches.

“He moves beautifully … great catch,” Hurricanes batsman Bailey conceded on his helmet microphone after watching the impressive dismissal.

Batting responsibilities were left largely to Bailey and Jon Wells (27) – who built a partnership of 58 – after Thunder bowler Clint McKay (4-28) spearheaded Sydney’s attack.

First to go was Ben Dunk (15) who skied a ball to Russell in the mid-field.

In the second of his three overs McKay claimed the crucial scalps of Kumar Sangakkara (16) and Hurricanes skipper Tim Paine (23), who were both caught behind by keeper Chris Hartley.

McKay’s fourth wicket came in the final over, with Darren Sammy (18) caught.

Bailey suffered through much of his time at the crease after being struck on the glove.

“It’s barking a little bit,” Bailey said when asked how his right thumb felt.

But he soldiered on, blasting six boundaries and two massive sixes and was unbeaten after 20 overs.
