Call them what you want, but keep a team on the Gold Coast

I may be something of an internationalist when it comes to rugby league, but this article will not be on the merits of relocating the Gold Coast team to Perth, Wellington, Uluru, South Nauru or the fourth moon of Jupiter.

As for the team’s name, call them the Titans, Bears or whatever – it really doesn’t matter.

The Gold Coast is to host the Commonwealth Games in 2018, and rugby league nines has a real chance of making the cut as a sport on show. For our game to be exposed on a world stage would be a marvellous thing.

Both short-term, for the Commonwealth Games, and long-term, for the health of Queensland, rugby league should have a professional presence in the city – whichever way this can be done.

In terms of club identity, no one will stop supporting the Gold Coast because they had a name change, and it can only bring positives to the city.

The only negatives are for the potential North Sydney or Central Coast Bears sides that will miss out, but if this is the only way that an organisation steeped in rugby league history and willing to invest heavily in the game is allowed in, then beggars can’t be choosers.
