Tottenham have squandered the chance to take over at the top of the English Premier League when they lost 1-0 at London rivals West Ham.

West Ham shocked the visitors in the seventh minute when Michail Antonio got in front of Nacer Chadli on the near edge of the six-yard box and headed home a Dimitri Payet corner.

Home captain Mark Noble brought a fine save from Hugo Lloris with a thunderous long-range strike that the Frenchman had to dive full-length to claw away.

Tottenham’s best chance came on the hour when Harry Kane somehow missed his kick in front of goal after West Ham keeper Adrian saved a low 25-metre drive from Toby Alderweireld.

Spurs, who needed a win to go top, were aiming for a seventh successive league victory for the first time in almost 50 years but lost their first league match since mid-January.

Arsenal’s title hopes took another heavy blow after a 2-1 defeat at home to Swansea that gave the visitors’ Premier League survival hopes a big boost.

The Gunners dominated the early stages and went ahead on 15 minutes when Joel Campbell slid along the ground to half-volley home a pass from Alexis Sanchez on the turn.

Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaqiri scored with a stunning strike in the 81st minute as his side dented Newcastle United’s hopes of avoiding relegation with a 1-0 win.

Fourth-placed City now sit 10 points behind league leader Leicester.

While Manchester United defeated Watford 1-0 to remain fifth but they move level on points with fourth-placed City who have a game in hand.
