Match preview:

The San Antonio Spurs have said they will rest all their starters, and it has left the Denver Nuggets, who are out of playoffs contention, as unexpected favourites. Join The Roar for live scores from 11am (AEST).

The Nuggets come into this one with the playoffs well and truly beyond them. It is at this point of the season where they can either start to build for next season or shut their ears, bury their heads in the sand and try to block out the season that has been.

Truth be told, it hasn’t been dismal for the Nuggets. They sit tenth in the Western Conference, but with a record of 32 and 47 you are simply never going to qualify for the finals. They sit a full six games back from the Houston Rockets, who still remain the final team who can qualify out west, if one of the top eight were to drop out.

The season might not have been dismal for the Nuggets, but their recent form has been. Losing five of their last six, not looking like shutting down teams or scoring enough points it has been a difficult time.

The Spurs of course have no such problems as they sit second in the Western Conference, and have been qualified for the post-season for about a month. They hold a record of 65 wins and 13 losses, which in any other season would see them just about first, but the Warriors have done a remarkable job.

Coach Greg Popovych has promised he will rest the whole starting team for this game. And it is of little wonder, hitting the road for what is a nothing game. They take on the Golden State Warriors on Monday, as they did yesterday and so the preparation for that is well and truly underway.

Before that loss against the Warriors, the Spurs had won four straight.

The sides have already played three times this year, with the Spurs absolutely dominating their meetings so far. All three have been double digit wins, and the Nuggets for the most park didn’t even look like they belonged on the same court.

Prediction
Even with the Spurs resting players, the Nuggets look like a bit of a lost cause and the Spurs bench will be keen to stand up and be counted for, in what will be a mainly nothing game.

Spurs by 12.
