A special Lionel Messi free kick set up a crushing 5-0 win for Barcelona over Espanyol, putting the Catalan club in La Liga’s box seat with just one round left to play.
Messi nailed free-kick from 22 yards sending it curling into the top corner, just beyond the reach of goalkeeper Pau Lopez.
Barcelona were just one point ahead of their rivals Real Madrid heading into the penultimate round of the La Liga where they faced their local rivals at Camp Nou.
It was a must win for the club with Real Madrid on 84 points, Atletico Madrid on 85 and Barca on 85 going into their 37th game.
Real Madrid beat Valencia 3-2 and are still trailing by a point, while Atletico Madrid lost to Levante 2-1 and are out of contention.
The early goal to Messi helped clear the nerves with Barca going on to win comfortably with Luis Suarez adding two of his own. Rafinha and Neymar were the other two goal scorers.
