Diego Costa had played just two games for the Brazilian national side when he announced in 2013 that, because he was a Spanish citizen, he wanted to instead play for the Spanish national side.
Many Brazilian fans didn’t take to well to the announcement, including Luiz Felipe Scolari 0 the Brazilian manager at the time – who said, “A Brazilian player who refuses to wear the shirt of the Brazilian national team and compete in a World Cup in your country is automatically withdrawn.
“He is turning his back on a dream of millions, to represent our national team, the five-time champions in a World Cup in Brazil.”
Costa made his Spain debut on March 5, 2014. Since then, he has only made ten appearances for the Spanish nation side, scoring one goal in a 4-0 thumping of Luxembourg.
Now, having been left out of the Spanish team for the upcoming Euros in France, would he be regretting the decision?
Costa is much more suited to the Brazilian national team. With the likes of Neymar Jr, Hulk, Felipe Anderson and Philippe Coutinho on the flanks, Costa would be perfect to hold the ball up for the attacking wingers, and be a physical presence in the box.
By contrast, Spain are very technical and like to hold possession. Álvaro Morata suits the play of the Spain side much better, just like Fernando Torres did in his younger days.
Costa’s switch to the Spain side has been a disaster, and I can’t see him making an impact with the side anytime soon.
What do you think Roarers, was Diego Costa’s switch a mistake, or does the Chelsea forward need more time to gel with the Spanish side?
