Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 4-3 on penalties in the German Cup final on Saturday to seal the club’s 11th domestic double and give coach Pep Guardiola a winning send-off.

Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer saved Sven Bender’s spot kick and Sokratis Papastathopoulos missed the next for Dortmund.

Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Buerki saved Joshua Kimmich’s penalty but Thomas Mueller kept Bayern in control, and Douglas Costa scored the decisive spot kick.

Both sides missed chances to win before the shootout in what was a tense encounter contested to the limits of the players’ endurance, though Buerki was by far the busier goalkeeper.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed a great chance to win it for Dortmund with five minutes remaining when he blazed over from close range on a counterattack.

Upon returning to Munich, Bayern coach Pep Guardiola said goodbye to the club’s fans. The team appeared on the Munich town hall balcony on Sunday to thank their supporters.

“It was an incredibly nice time here. Many thanks,” Guardiola said before some 10,000 supporters who had gathered to celebrate the league and cup double.

Guardiola is leaving for Manchester City after three seasons in charge of Bayern, who will be led next season by Italian Carlo Ancelotti.

It was a familiar celebration for Bayern players, who were back at the town hall a week after winning a record fourth straight Bundesliga title.

The Spaniard once again apologised for failing to win the Champions League with Bayern, but he leaves the club having won seven trophies: three league titles, two cup triumphs, the Club World Cup, and the UEFA Supercup.

“I’ll miss working with these players every day. These lads are outstanding,” Guardiola had said after the cup final victory in Berlin.

“It’s been a great experience for me and life in Munich has been super. So is the Bundesliga: the stadiums always full, the fans respectful. It’s all been very, very good. I wish Bayern all the best in the years to come.”

Captain Phillip Lahm had declined the skipper’s usual privilege of hoisting the cup into the night sky, leaving it instead to Guardiola.

“I thought it would be fitting. The coach has done so much for the team and the club. He deserved the cup,” he said.
