An open (love) letter to rugby

No rugby this weekend? What will we do? (AFP PHOTO / MARTY MELVILLE)

Mid-afternoon on a Friday full of rain,
Curled in an office chair; heart full of pain.

The usual plans are nowhere in sight.
Why the hell is there no rugby tonight?

My morale has dropped; my work ethic is low.
What shall I watch? Where shall I go?

The pleasure of consuming chips and cider,
Will be filled with guilt, as my frown grows wider.

No sign of flashy plays or backhanded flicks,
On the plus side – I won’t see dodgy box-kicks!

I won’t see a scrum or lineout assemble;
Just thinking about it makes my lips start to tremble.

From the Kings to the Crusaders, I’ll miss them all.
I need to find a substitute for that perfect, oval ball.

Will I call up my friends or go out and hit the city?
No Test or Super Rugby – oh what a pity!

I guess I know about a party I could probably attend
A perfect little distraction as my heart starts to mend

Wait, I have a recording of a game from last week!
I’ve watched it four times, but this situation is bleak.

Channel 502 might even show an old Bledisloe Cup
But will this satiate my rugby cravings… nup!

No, I need something else, a game new and shiny
Surely I’m not the only fan being this whiney

I need to stop writing; my boss is around
I’ll miss you rugby – see you next round.
