Slice’s last fight was against Dada 5000 at Bellator 149 in February. Slice won the fight, but the result was overturned after he tested positive for anabolic steroids.
“We are all shocked and saddened by the devastating and untimely loss of Kimbo Slice, a beloved member of the Bellator family,” said Bellator CEO Scott Coker.
“One of the most popular MMA fighters ever, Kimbo was a charismatic, larger-than-life personality that transcended the sport.
“Outside of the cage he was a friendly, gentle giant and a devoted family man. His loss leaves us all with extremely heavy hearts, and our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Ferguson family and all of Kimbo’s friends, fans, and teammates.”
Slice rose to international prominence on the UFC-backed reality show The Ultimate Fighter, winning the season 10 finale to earn a shot at UFC stardom. It was not to be however, and after losing to Matt Mitrione at UFC 113, Slice made the move to professional boxing.
He had a successful seven-match career in the ring, in that he won all seven bouts, but returned to mixed martial arts with Bellator last January.
Slice was due to next appear for the promotion at The O2 in London, on July 16 this year.
