Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi has announced his international career is over following the side’s loss to Chile in the Copa America final.
Messi, who missed a crucial penalty kick in a shoot-out told Argentine broadcaster TyC Sports that he has had enough of the international game at the age of 29.
“The national team is over for me. The decision is already made. That’s it,” Messi said.
Messi was clearly distraught after losing the final to Chile for a second straight year.
“It’s a great sadness that it happened to me again, the fact that I missed a penalty kick that very important,” he said.
“It’s not enough to just get to the final and not win.”

The decision comes after Messi had hit out at the Argentine Football Association on his Instagram just three days ago, complaining about delays at the airport.
Messi had broken Gabriel Batistuta’s record for most goals for Argentina during the Copa America. After 112 caps for Argentina he found the back of the net 55 times.
While the 29-year-old seemed certain that it was his final appearance for the national team, the fact he said it in the heat of the moment after the devastating loss may give fans hope that he will reconsider.
It was a double blow for Argentina with Javier Mascherano also announcing his retirement from international football.
