Kirisome Auva’a has become the second player sacked by South Sydney in 48 hours, with the troubled NRL star having his contract terminated for a second drugs breach.
Just two days after Paul Carter had his contract torn up for failing to turn up to training following a bender, the Rabbitohs axed the 2014 premiership-winning outside back after he contravened the NRL’s illicit drugs policy.
The club was at length to point out Auva’a had not tested positive but had “contravened the rules as set out in the NRL policy”.
After recording his first strike earlier in the year, Auva’a was facing at least a 12-game ban however the club exercised its right to sack him.
“Under the terms of the policy, the club has the right to terminate the contract of players following a second breach, which it has decided to do,” the club said on Thursday in a statement.
“The club will continue to offer welfare assistance and support to Kirisome.”
Auva’a and his management had a chance to respond to the breach by last Wednesday however chose not to and he was let go after appearing before the club’s board.
He served a 22-game ban last year after pleading guilty to domestic violence offences.
After making a successful return to the game at the back end of 2015, he was signed to a three-year contract extension however faces an uncertain future due to his chequered history.
