Tuesday night saw Lou Goodwin take out the inaugural season of Channel Nine’s new show, the NRL Rookie.

The 24-year-old back-rower saw out hefty competition from fellow players Chris Hyde and Jordan Martin – son of former Raider’s great, Paul.

Rugby league is engrained in the Goodwin name, with Lou’s father Matt a former Penrith Panther player of the year.

Unlike other contestants, Lou has already had a taste of the big-league, having previously signed for Sydney Roosters in the NYC.

However, leaving his small, country town of West Wyalong for the big city would inevitably prove too much for the then nineteen-year old – with Goodwin deciding to return home, and ply his trade as a carpenter.

Goodwin was given the opportunity to sign for one of two-clubs, receiving interest from the Canberra Raiders and Gold Coast Titans.

In the end Canberra won out, with Goodwin signing for the city he represented in the NSW Cup, Mounties RLFC.

“(Canberra is) somewhere you can stay true to your values, your family and your roots and play great footy. We’ve got a history of working with boys like you, boys taking different opportunities and pathways,” said Raider’s football manager John Bonasera.

Goodwin went on to praise the work of Ricky Stuart

“I know Ricky Stuart’s down there and he runs a really good training camp”.

Goodwin will officially kick-start his Raider’s career in the 2017 pre-season and will be bolstered by $50,000 in prize-money received for winning the competition.
