The Essendon Bombers have claimed just their second win of the season in a tense six-point victory over the Gold Coast Suns at Etihad Stadium.

In a game that had plenty of momentum swings, it was the Bombers who stood up when it counted.

Going into the final term trailing by seven points, Essendon finished strongly kicking four last-quarter goals while the Suns could only manage one goal and seven points.

Despite the Suns having 25 more inside 50s, the Essendon defence led by Matthew Dea and Patrick Ambrose held their nerve in the important moments to keep their side in the game.

With Joe Daniher firmly entrenched in a battle with Steven May, Orazio Fantasia stepped up for the Bombers and was the leading goalkicker in the game with three majors.

For the Suns they will be wondering what happened in that final quarter as they seemed to lack direction and composure going forward.

The win gives the Bombers fans something to cheer about after a tough year while the Suns will be counting down the days until this season is over and they can build for 2017.

The Roar’s AFL MVP votes
3 – David Zaharakis
David Zaharakis was best on ground in this game with 40 disposals, six tackles, four marks, four clearances and six inside 50s.

2 – Touk Miller
Touk Miller did everything he could for the Suns on his way to 39 disposals, one goal, eight score involvements, seven marks, four tackles, four clearances and 11 inside 50s.

1 – Patrick Ambrose
This vote could have gone to any member of the Bombers defence but I have given it to Paddy Ambrose for his job on Tom Lynch and the fact he racked up 17 disposals, three marks, three tackles and five rebound 50s in a gutsy performance.
