Collingwood have demolished a dispirited Gold Coast Suns outfit at Etihad by 71 points, recording their second biggest win of the season.

The Pies dominated from the start with a huge first half outscoring the Suns 12 goals to one.

Led by Scott Pendlebury and Adam Treloar, the Pies midfield completely blanketed the Suns, doing as they pleased. Many times they were able to run the ball from deep defence to their forward line untouched.

Eleven Collingwood players had 20 or more possessions as the Suns’ lack of pressure and intensity stood out like a sore thumb.

Far too many times Collingwood players were left on their own and had plenty of time to stop and look for teammates in better position. The Suns also refused to apply body pressure in marking contests.

For the Pies it was like an extended training run as the Suns persisted with playing ‘bruise free’ football.

A few Suns players gave it a decent effort including Touk Miller and Steven May who could never be accused of not applying pressure.

The Pies lost Darcy Moore early with a hamstring injury late in the first half but the game was already over by then.

Plus the Pies’ Jesse White probably had his best game for Collingwood finishing with ten marks including six inside 50, and could have finished with five or six goals.

The Pies would have also been encouraged by the performance of several of their youngsters including Josh Smith with a career-high 35-possession performance, Tom Phillips (25 disposals), Brayden Maynard (22), Marley Williams (21) and Rupert Wills (18).

For the Suns, who decided that they would spend the whole week in Melbourne, it’s been a very long seven days, losing to the bottom-placed Bombers before tonight’s non-competitive effort.

Yes they have a long injury list, but so do many other teams, including the Pies. Coach Rodney Eade and his team have taken a big step backwards this past week and face a long and searching summer ahead.

Final score
Collingwood 16.22.118
Gold Coast 6.11.47
