The Milwaukee Bucks and forward Giannis Antetokounmpo have agreed to a contract extension.

The $100 million, four-year deal is a borderline steal for the Bucks, with Giannis able to ask for $106 million over the same time period.

Sure, $6 million is not a big amount when many role players are worth that for one season, but it will help the team keep their young core together in later seasons.

This marks the first time in franchise history the Bucks have signed anyone on a nine-figure deal and shows Milwaukee are serious about having the Greek national as the face of the franchise.

The Bucks have a history of over-paying players, so being able to get one on a slightly less-than-max deal, especially someone with Giannis’ talents, is a big win.

The 21-year-old averaged 16.9 points, 7.7. rebounds and 4.3 assists in the 2015-2016 season. Although his shooting is still a work in progress, his abilities as a ball handler are fantastic – making head coach Jason Kidd think more than once about having him play as a primary point guard.

After the All Star break last year he went on a tear, recording five triple-doubles.

With Antetokounmpo playing the point guard position in March of last year, the Bucks averaged over 105 points per 100 possession, by far the best rate they had all season. Those numbers dipped in the shorter April, but Kidd was more than happy with his team results.

The Bucks are clearly on the rise, and if they can surround Antetkounmpo with more talent, they could be an Eastern Conference contender.
