Cronulla Sharks fullback Ben Barba has scored the first try of the 2016 NRL Grand Final.

Luke Lewis almost crossed seconds earlier but was pulled up just short. A well-worked scrum caught Melbourne off guard and Paul Gallen spotted Barba in a gap close to the line for the fullback to score in the 15th minute.

The try was successfully converted by James Maloney and, in combination with a penalty goal from earlier in the match, gave the Cronulla Sharks an 8-0 lead early in the match as they pursue their first premiership.

There would be no more scoring before half time with the Sharks taking that eight-point advantage into half time, important given the predictions by some that they would need a fast start to be any hope of taking down the Storm.

The Storm entered the match as the raging favourites with many considering their methodical, consistent style of play to be unbeatable, but a fast start for the Sharks has certainly put them in with a chance of claiming the title.

For now, though, Ben Barba is the name you’re looking for if you are trying to work out who just won the first try scorer sweep! And his try could prove to be an important moment in Cronulla history if the Sharks hold on.
