Even David Warner has to learn how to rein it in when the ball is zipping around on a pitch like the one in Hobart.
Australia were bowled out for just 85 early on day one of the second Test against South Africa, a collapse kickstarted with Warner’s dismissal in the opening over.
Warner lashed at a loose delivery from Vernon Philander that may well have been judged a wide had the vice-captain shouldered arms.
Instead he was the first of six Australian batsmen to be out edging and the first of five batsmen to be dismissed by Philander.
“We know David plays that way but probably not the first over on a seaming track,” Lehmann said of the opener’s lowest Test score on Australian soil since last year’s day-night fixture at Adelaide Oval.
“He’s got to get used to the conditions. If the wicket’s flat and normal he probably hits that for four, it’s really just summing it up. He knows that.”
It was a message Lehmann unsuccessfully preached to all of his charges prior to the start of play.
“We could have tried a few different things (to combat Philander) that we talked about,” he said.
“We’ve got to refine our game. As we spoke about before the game, if we happen to bat first we had to really rein it in and make sure they’re bowling a lot of good balls to challenge us.
“A couple of dismissals probably didn’t warrant that … 85 is not good enough.
“When the ball is swinging we’ve struggled haven’t we? There’s no hiding from the fact.”
