With one day of the second Test between Australia and South Africa already lost to rain, the Hobart weather forecast will be under close scrutiny for the remainder of the match.

With Australia doing their best to lose the Test in the opening session, many have been asking whether the notoriously drizzly Hobart weather will come to the Aussies’ aid.

The answer, at least for the time being, appears to be “no.”

While the start of the second session on Day 3 was delayed due to rain, the forecast for the remainder of Monday appears to be fairly good, with the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) predicting the showers will clear as the afternoon progresses.

The weather is only predicted to get better in the game’s final two days, with just a 30 per cent chance of rain forecast on Tuesday and that figure dropping to 20 for Friday.

Even if the heavens do open during the latter half of the match, it’s hard to see it having a particularly negligible impact on the game, as any rainfall is expected to be light; only a maximum of 0.4mm of rain is predicted on Tuesday, and the BoM listing the possible rainfall as 0mm for Wednesday.

Weatherzone is also forecasting a few days of result-friendly weather. While the temperature isn’t expected to get hot – it’s not forecast to get above 20 for the entire Test – it is expected to dry up.

They’re claiming the chance of rain for Day 4 is 60 per cent, and that drops to just five per cent for Day 5 on Wednesday.

Once again, any precipitation is expected to be light, with less than one millimetre forecast for both days.

So, it doesn’t look like the weather is going to be any help for Australia. Instead, the hosts are going to require a much-improved display with the bat to keep this series alive going into the third and final Test in Adelaide.
