The Western Sydney Wanderers are desperate to convince the rest of the league they’re worthy of being in the premiership conversation and hosting Melbourne City will present one of the tougher tasks in doing so in a match that will surely provide some fireworks. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:50pm (AEDT).

The Western Sydney Wanderers took a battering at the hands of Melbourne Victory last week, losing 3-0.

The scoreline doesn’t tell the story though as the Wanderers had many chances to put up a fight. Jumpei Kusukami and Nicolas Martinez were pulling the strings but their strikers struggled to capitalise.

The Wanderers defence continues to heap misery upon their fans, not keeping a clean sheet in six games this season.

Silly mistakes last week against Melbourne Victory cost them dearly as miskicks and poor awareness led to an embarrassing defensive display which, if it’s kept up, will be exploited mercilessly by a free-flowing Melbourne City.

The Wanderers have been vulnerable defending counter-attacks especially and this is a blaring red spot for them as the pacey and agile trio of Fernando, Brandan Bruno Fornaroli and Bruce Kamau have shown their devastating effect with their speed and incisive finishing this season, scoring five goals and setting up another five.

The Wanderers midfield of Nicolas Martinez and Jumpei Kusukami are going to have very little room to move freely with Luke Brattan and Neil Kilkenny defending. The strong City midfielders enjoy pressing and getting stuck into tackles, which will block the road the Wanderers foreigners enjoy travelling.

Melbourne City recorded another win last week to keep up with leaders Sydney FC, defeating the Newcastle jets 2-1 thanks to a first half brace from top goal scorer Bruno Fornaroli.

City have only recorded one win outside of Melbourne this season, coming from the first round. Since then however, their midfield fluidity, attacking power and defensive structure have all improved after conceding only four goals from open play, while scoring 11.

One spot of bother, however is City’s goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis. The young Aussie is currently keeping out last seasons Goalkeeper of the Year Thomas Sorensen.

City have kept their faith in him much to the anger of disgruntled fans who have had to cope with mistakes and scares at the back this season.

These two teams always provide a big show and it should be the exact same. Although the Wanderers have struggled in front of goal this season, they’ve scored in each game they’ve played at Spotless Stadium so both teams should score but Melbourne City will get it done and take the three points.
