Match preview:

Sydney FC are six points clear at the top of the league as they return home to face the current champions Adelaide United on Saturday night, which is sure to showcase a hefty battle for three points in Sydney. Join The Roar for live scores and a live blog of the match, starting from 7:50pm (AEDT).

Sydney FC were unlucky not to take away three points from Brisbane Roar after heroics from goalkeeper Michael Theo spared Brisbane their blushes after a thunderbolt from Josh Brillante earned a point for the Sky Blues.

In one of their best performances this season, Sydney FC’s pressing style saw them dispossess the Brisbane defence on countless occasions to open up chances for Bobô and captain Alex Brosque in the first half. Alex Brosque was commended for one of his best first half acts of the season as his work rate in closing down led to the goal for Josh Brillante.

Adelaide United’s defence are quite vulnerable to high pressing, considering their defenders are susceptible to mistakes at the back from getting closed down for long periods. Their full-backs this season Tarek Elrich and Ben Garrucio, while performing well going forward have been struggling to deal with piling up of men on the wings which Sydney FC do extremely well with Rhyan Grant and Michael Zullo.

Adelaide United were reduced to ten men last week against Perth Glory away as they fell to a 3-1 defeat to keep them rooted to the bottom of the league. A brace from Andy Keogh rubbed salt into the wounds as young Jordan O’Doherty was sent off, as was manager Guillermo Amor who was sent to the stands on accounts of abusing the referee.

Adelaide failed to make their chances count as they only managed one opportunity inside the box against Perth, despite having the majority of the possession. This may be as a result of their inexperienced wingers, Ryan Kitto and Jordan O’Doherty, who are still feeling their way through professional football.

Sydney FC don’t always count for having most of the possession in matches, but, with Argentinian magician Marcelo Carrusca fit and firing once again, too much space for Carrusca could spell doom as he controls and pulls the strings in the final third. Failure to close down Carrusca will prove a tough task for Sydney FC to gain three points.

Close attention must be payed also Isaias. The Spanish anchor controls Adelaides tempo and style of play and is one of their hardest workers with the greatest work rate. Against Perth Glory he clocked up a total of nine recoveries and a 88 per cent conversion rate on his passes proving his importance in dictating the play of the match, when and where to attack and how best to exploit Sydney’s strong midfield.

This match always provides goals, however with Adelaide struggling to start firing it could be a different story. Sydney FC have taken maximum points from home and I think they will do so again. I’m predicting Sydney FC to inflict another 3-1 defeat to Adelaide United.
