Under-fire ARL commission chairman John Grant will continue in his post for the foreseeable future after striking a deal with the NRL clubs calling for his head.
On a day of high drama at Rugby League Central, Grant, NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg and the commission agreed to a funding arrangement to appease the clubs.
It was speculated that the clubs would demand that Grant would stand down by this time next year however Greenberg said an exit date hadn’t been negotiated.
“There is no time limit on his tenure at all,” Greenberg said.
“John will serve as long as the members want him to serve.”
Grant’s relationship with the clubs and state leagues looked beyond repair after they called the emergency general meeting where they planned to sack him.
The two parties now have the difficult task of getting back on the same page, something Grant always insisted was achievable despite the public campaign to axe him.
Greenberg argued that his offsider always had the best interests of the game at heart and had the difficult task of appeasing opposing groups who were all competing for a slice of the $1.8 billion TV deal.
“This is not a new phenomenon in sport where the distribution of funding creates debate,” Greenberg said.
“Rugby league is no different to most others. And today was the outcome of a couple of difficult weeks for the game.”
