Crows hold firm on Cameron as Lions prowl

41 Have your say

Adelaide are refusing to blink first in the staring contest with Brisbane over want-away Crows speedster Charlie Cameron.

Adelaide list manager Justin Reid continued to push the line that Cameron is a required player on Friday, while the Lions maintain they are having fruitful discussions on a potential trade.

The Crows have four first-round draft picks over the next two years following Thursday’s Jake Lever trade – No.10 and 16 this year and their own and Melbourne’s first call in 2018.

In addition to this year’s No.1 pick, Brisbane currently hold picks 12, 18 and 19, which would come into play in a move for Cameron.

His manager Colin Young has done his best to crowbar his client out of West Lakes.

Young has stated Cameron will never sign a new deal after his current contract runs out at the end of next season and won’t be happy if he is held to his contract.

“I try not to get caught up in the emotion of it too much … we have a really good relationship with Col and Charlie,” Reid told AFL Trade Radio on Friday.

“I know Charlie, if he was at our football club next year which we expect, then he’ll come with the right attitude and we know we’ll put our arms around him and he’ll play good football.

“A lot can change in the next week or 24 hours let alone 12 months so I think we’ll worry about that over the next 12 months.”

The Lever trade was one of three deals done on Thursday as the trade period sprang to life after three days of inaction.

Greater Western Sydney sent Devon Smith to Essendon for pick No.11 and a swap of later picks and Port Adelaide traded Jarman Impey to Hawthorn for a second-round pick and a further swap of later selections.

Fremantle completed the fourth official move of the trade window on Friday when Hayden Crozier moved to the Western Bulldogs for pick 40.

It’s a strange opening line. Why ‘Adelaide are refusing to blink first’? Why not ‘Neither side is blinking’?

I think a more appropriate turn of phrase would be that the ball is in Brisbane’s court. I’d imagine that Brisbane has put pick 18/19 on the table, Adelaide have said no, so Brisbane will go away and think what their next move is. Not a lot of staring going on. I’m thinking that he stays at Adelaide next year and unless he changes his mind, then gets traded to Brisbane. Charlie is probably better able to help Adelaide win a premiership next year than a draft pick can.

I agree that if anyone has a decision to make it’s Brisbane. I’d be surprised and more than a little disappointed if they offered more than pick 18. According to Cameron’s manager 19 has been offered. I think that’s already overpaying.

I think it’s likely a deal gets done one way or the other. Adelaide would be conscious that while he’s playing regularly now, they have younger players who might go past Cameron next season. And of course Brisbane don’t want to run the risk of him changing his mind in twelve months.

This should have been sorted out already if you only look at it as a straight trade for CC and a draft pick. Seems as though there are other deals being haggled away from the spot light that will include the use of draft picks from the CC trade.

Brisbane have offered pick 19 (now pick 20) which allows Adelaide to push them down to pick 18 and maybe a swap of lower picks. I too would be disappointed if pick 12 was involved. Better to let him slide for a year and possible get him for free.

I personally find it hilarious for once Brisbane is the team trying to entice out a wantaway player and it’s someone else having to deal with all the drama.

Adelaide aren’t the villains, I just think they’ve got their head in the sand. When the player’s manager is out there saying 100% he’ll never sign another contract with Adelaide then you face facts and let them go

The only reason Adelaide have dug their heels in so much is because of players who have left before, not Cameron.

presumably Tex will be prepared with another giant dummy spit once the Crows eventually come to terms with his departure

We have an established player who is core to the team and we should just give up 19 to maybe get a player of equal quality while in a premiership window? If we were bottom of the pile and needing to rebuild then I agree it’s good value but we have the luxury of holding out.

Adelaide are in their rights to put whatever price they want on him (just like Carlton are regarding Gibbs [which Crows fans have sooked about for over a year now]) but to say pick 19 is ‘peanuts’ just isn’t true. You are being disingenuous in trying to paint it as Brisbane low-balling you. Your club may want more but it is no where near a ‘peanuts’ offer.

He’s a role player not a core player. You core players are Walkers, Jacobs, Sloane & Crouch’s. Not Cameron.

Pick 19 or 20 is massive overs. Especially when he says he’s not signing another contract and is expires at the end of the next season.

So when that expires you get squat for him. Real smart playing hard ball.

I’m sorry Paul D, I think you’re missing the point here. Charlie’s manager may be right and he may not sign another contract with Adelaide, but he might not be signing with Brisbane either if that signature doesn’t come till next year. As has been established his closest family members mostly live in WA, sure he’s probably got other family and mates in Brisbane, which makes it an attractive move. If reports are right and the money on offer is double what he’s currently earning, a move to Brisbane could conceivably land him a windfall of maybe 250K to 300K, but it would only be a one off. If Adelaide hold him to his contract sure he may be disgruntled, but Adelaide’s contract offer will move closer to what Brisbane are offering. Conceivably he may attract interest from the West, which may interest him and the money on offer may not be that much different than what Brisbane have put to him. Fremantle and/or West Coast may have a second round pick that they might be willing to give up and I’m sure Brisbane would be able to trump their offers with a 2nd round pick, but isn’t that likely to be pretty similar to the offer that they currently have put up. Added to that picks next year are now more valuable to Adelaide than this years picks. Adelaide will think it’s worth a punt to be a little bit stubborn.

            So what’s your point?

Charlie is still leaving but if we hang on for a year he might go to WA instead of Brisbane? As an Adelaide fan I’m not sure why you’d care about the difference.

You then go on to say Adelaide will offer a player who’s angry and doesn’t want to be there…more money in 2018? Ok then.

How is he going to attract interest from the West on big money after year spent arguing with his club? Will Adelaide play him in the firsts every week if he’s fit even if he’s insisting he won’t be there next year?

Basically your point…as far as I can interpret it, seems to be if Adelaide hold firm one of the clubs from Perth will ride to the rescue in 2018 with a juicy draft pick and a fat contract. Good luck with that.

I do agree that picks next year seem more valuable than picks this year, but that’s why you insist on Brisbane’s 2nd rounder for 2018, or you take the pick 19 we’re offering, which I happen to think is pretty generous. You’ll note no-one else seems particularly interested, and the only reason this Perth theory is getting a run is because his Mum lives there. Lot of pie in the sky coming out of Adelaide of late.

In regards to crying of late I will rephrase to Adelaide fans have been stating there is a outright conspiracy against the club they support, they have also been accusing anyone who doesn’t see things from their perspective as a brainless sheep blindly following Victorian media propaganda, they also are congratulating a person for being un PC but deriding anyone who challenge the regime a decidedly PC thing to do.

I think the crows can afford to ask for overs because if they dont get it they will have cameron for next season anyway. Players are professionals and he will honor his contract despite what his amatuerish manager says. If cameron does not perform then the crows have the depth to replace him anyway. They dont have to trade him which is why they can sit back and wait for brisbanes best and final
