Aside from the spectacle of great competition, sport has provided much support to communities and charities around the world.
On March 24th at the Elanora Squash Centre on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, some of the world’s greatest squash players will compete in an exhibition raising money for headspace, the national youth mental health foundation, before the 2018 Commonwealth Games which take place on the Gold Coast in April.
This is an excellent event considering the talent the organizers have been able to acquire for this event.
The world’s seventh-ranked Joelle King, 11th-ranked Paul Coll, 14th-ranked Donna Urquhart, 19th-ranked Ryan Cuskelly and 20th-ranked Cameron Pilley will all participate. In addition to these top-20 talents, Zac Alexander and Aaron Frankcomb will compete, both of whom were top-40 players at one point in their careers.
The opportunity to witness such talent paired with a great cause is rare. Hopefully, this trend continues, and more and more world-class players from other sports start to participate in events for Australian charities similar to this squash exhibition.
Event organizer Jake Cohen is trying to raise $20,000 for the games. In addition to being a player in the event, Frankcomb is also the director of the East Coast Squash Academy which has already contributed greatly (as of March 8th) to headspace.
“The East Coast Squash Academy is honoured to contribute over $5,000 worth of time and resources towards the headspace Charity Squash Extravaganza event,” Frankcomb said.
“Jake Cohen has been working tirelessly to raise more than $20,000 in tickets and donations for the headspace charity, leveraging our great sport. For the first time ever, the local Northern Beaches community will have the chance to see some of the best professional squash players in the world in their local club.”
In order to attend the event, potential patrons can purchase tickets starting from $100. Included in the ticket, in addition to the game, is a two-course meal and four alcoholic beverages.
