It is the final round of the AFLW 2018 competition, and the Giants going into Friday night sit third on the ladder with 14 points.
Both the Western Bulldogs and the Melbourne Demons sit equal top with 16 points, percentage seeing the Dogs sit first. As we all know, the top two play off in the Grand Final.
The Giants just need to win and win by as much as they can against the Lions. It really is that simple. It is not ideal for the Giants as they would rather not be relying on other results, but they have to work with what they have got.
Nicola Barr, Amanda Farrugia, Erin McKinnon, Alicia Eva, Courtney Gum and Cora Staunton were all named in last week’s AFLW team of the week.
The Giants will need them continue their good form to make sure two points are secured to give them a chance to play in the Grand Final.
Regardless whether the Giants make the Grand Final or not, it has been an improvement on last season, where they finished last. One feels they will be challenging next season.
As for the Lions, they are out of contention sitting fifth with 12 points next to its name. Still, there are plenty of positives to be taken out of this season for them, especially the promising Sabrina Frederick-Traub, who no doubt will be a key player for the Giants to stop.
It is difficult to predict what type of game to expect. One would think the Giants will play an intense and contested brand of footy seeing what is on the line for them, but in terms of the contest, it will be interesting to see how the Lions approach this seeing as they are playing for nothing more than pride.
Prediction
All motivation is with the Giants as they do need a win to stand any chance of playing in the Grand Final. As for the Lions, it really is just a bit of a dead rubber.
