America’s biggest NBA stars including LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant are set to make an appearance in Melbourne as part of a two-match series between Australia and America.

Two matches will be played at Etihad Stadium in August next year with some of the biggest stars in the game representing America, while Australia will have the likes of Ben Simmons, Dante Exum, Matthew Dellavedova and Patty Mills to defend its pride.

The matches will be played on Thursday August 22 2019, and two days later on Saturday August 24 2019.

Fans interested in attending the matches can register that interest online today from 11am AEDT.

“This announcement is a landmark moment for Basketball Australia and all fans of our great game,” said Basketball Australia chief executive Anthony Moore. “I believe this event will be long remembered in Australian sporting history.”

Victorian premier Dan Andrews said the state was the perfect place to host the series.

“This is the one Australian basketball fans have been waiting for, and there’s no better place to host the USA team than the sporting capital of the country — Victoria.”

Larry Kestrelman, Executive Director of the NBL, said the concept would allow Australian fans to see all the very best players of the NBA.

“This is bigger than any NBA game, this is the combination of every best player in the USA coming here to play Australia,” he said.

“I think we’ve stepped a couple of steps and gone straight to the bonanza of basketball. This is the holy grail.”
