Australian great Mick Fanning’s surfing swansong will continue at Bells Beach on Tuesday in the fourth round of the world championship event.

Organisers have re-started the men’s competition at the Rip Curl Pro, with Fanning to meet countryman Matt Wilkinson and American Patrick Gudauskas for a place in the quarter-finals.

This is the last professional event for Fanning, the three-time world champion who’s rung the bell four times on the Victorian coast.

He will compete after the remaining third-round heats are completed in overhead-sized waves.

Fanning’s is the second of four three-man fourth-round heats, with the top two progressing to the final eight.

Fellows Australian Owen Wright and surprise packer Wade Carmichael also progressed to the fourth round.

The 36-year-old Fanning’s chances for a triumphant finale were boosted on Monday when world No.1 Julian Wilson and defending Bells Beach champion Jordy Smith were eliminated.

They were further enhanced when reigning world champion John John Florence was ousted when third-round action resumed on Thursday morning.

Joel Parkinson’s event then came to an end as he was pipped 11.60 to 9.07 by Frederico Morais.

Fanning has not won an event since the 2016 J-Bay Open in South Africa having returned a year after being attacked by a shark.

The men’s fourth round will precede the women’s quarter-finals.
