State of Origin is one of the biggest sporting events on the calendar, and the weather forecast can have a big outcome on not only the result, but what type of game we see.

The New South Wales Blues and Queensland Maroons will do battle on the hallowed turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with kick-off set down for 8pm (AEST) on Wednesday, June 6, although the actual start of the game is likely to be about 15 minutes later.

In typical Melbourne fashion, it’s going to be a cold day. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, it’ll be a cold start to the day, with temperatures dropping to just five degrees, otherwise known as the worst possible conditions for getting out of bed and going for a walk, as the teams will likely do on match day.

Fog and frost will also be around in the morning, before it lifts and the temperature climbs to a chilly top of 18 degrees.

That will obviously drop away when the sun sets before kick-off, but in some positive news, the temperature isn’t expected to drop below ten degrees overnight, meaning it shouldn’t be freezing cold throughout the first game of the series.

The BOM also forecasts that there is a zero per cent chance of rain, which will please players, referees and fans alike, with over 80,000 expected to fill out the MCG for the match.

Winds are also expected to be light, although, inside the MCG, it would take some significant winds to cause any effect on the match itself.

With a dry surface expected, we should in for a fast, free-flowing sort of game.

Let’s hope the forecasters are right.
