Des breaks his duck after epic final stand sees Titans pull off Anzac boilover to stun Warriors in Auckland
Did it take three attempts? What about seven? What about thirteen? The Des Hasler era is up and running at the Gold Coast Titans…
Gold Coast favourite Preston Campbell has offered his former side a helping hand, but only if they want it.
The retired Titan’s already-lofty status at the NRL club was elevated again on Sunday when he had a grandstand named after him in a surprise announcement.
The veteran of 267 games started and finished his career on the Gold Coast and remains one of the side’s most loyal fans.
Speaking before the Titans were dusted 34-0 by rivals Brisbane – a result that all but ended the side’s faint finals hopes – Campbell was adamant the club had everything bar one crucial ingredient.
“I’ve said the last two or three years; they’ve got a squad to make the semis, go all the way,” he said.
“The boys just need to believe in themselves; they have a city and spectators that do, it’s a matter of belief for them.”
The former fullback or No.6 – an inaugural signing at the Titans after a previous stint with the now-defunct Chargers – could offer a significant off-field presence but is reluctant to get too involved.
“I’d love to, but there’s so many people here supporting them and I don’t want to be the bloke that hangs on,” he said.
“But if they need me I’ll always be there for them.”
Campbell, 41, still plays locally and was genuinely shocked by Sunday’s honour.
“I’m speechless; rugby league’s already done so much for me … I played 14 years and had a great time and this tops it off,” he said.
“I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to repay the faith … because it helped me grow as a person.”
