Newcastle will consider themselves unlucky to finish Round 1 pointless, after their 2-1 loss to Tottenham. Spurs’ first goal was only a few millimetres over the line, and Rafa Benitez’s men had ample opportunity to equalise in the second half.
After a poor few years, the Magpies are looking more promising after a decent 2017-18 season, when they finished tenth, and the acquisition of Federico Fernandez will certainly help.
Newcastle have also won six of their last seven games against Cardiff, their most recent encounter being a 2-0 away victory in Wales. But the Bluebirds are still a force to be reckoned with, even if they did receive a rude awakening at the hands of Bournemouth last weekend.
Since they appointed manager Neil Warnock in October 2016, the Welsh side have rarely lost at home and a win in front of their beloved fans after a four-year EPL hiatus will give this team plenty of confidence.
The Premier League, of course, provides a tougher test than what they’ve faced recently, so beating Newcastle may be a step too far.
Prediction
Cardiff cannot be taken lightly, especially since they are playing their first Premier League match at home in four years, but the Magpies should be too strong.
