With the fourth Club Roar Awards closing in, we wanted to mark the occasion by celebrating the past clubs and players to take home a chunk of the $10,000 on offer and have helped make the Awards Australia’s largest celebration of grassroots sport and weekend heroes.
It’s almost been a year since the Eastern Lions were crowned the winners of the second Club Roar Award, also taking out the Funniest Video Award to boot, for the classic synchronized dive between keeper and defender.
“Looking back on it, I still enjoy the moment. It captures the determination on the part of the defending team to keep trying. Not a bad philosophy” said the club’s official videographer, Ian Dunn.
Having scooped up two awards, the club took home $3,000 in prize money.
The Eastern Lions put the money to good use and were able to purchase new training equipment for their 7-11 years-old Mini-Roos program, helping support the next generation of Lions and Socceroos hopefuls.
“Our program, and that of our Little Rookies (4-6 year olds), is growing every year! So [the Club Roar Awards] came in very handy,” said Lions president, Norm Willcocks.
Since then, the Lions senior men’s side have exceeded expectations and are firming to finish in the top three this season. It’s a huge achievement for a side that many predicted would be lucky to escape relegation not too long ago.
Meanwhile, the Under 20s are in pole position to win the NPL2 East Victoria league, giving the club plenty to roar about now and into the future!
The Eastern Lions have become one of Club Roar’s featured clubs with well over 150 videos and are once again well in the running for more success at the Awards.
The Club Roar Awards close on 17th of September with the winners and $10,000 announced the 26th of September. Have a classic moment, a hilarious gaff or a pearler of a sporting story?
