Sydney Roosters co-captain Jake Friend will be free to play in the upcoming grand final if he accepts an early plea over his lifting tackle on South Sydney Rabbitohs captain Greg Inglis.

The NRL Judiciary handed down a grade 1 charge over the incident, which occurred during the first half of the Roosters’ preliminary final win, yet with no similar offences across the last two years, Friend will avoid suspension if he agrees to the charge.

The NRL judiciary will nonetheless meet this week as Melbourne Storm fullback attempts to have his ban for a shoulder charge overturned.

Meanwhile, the Roosters will be sweating over the fitness of star halfback Cooper Cronk, who played through much of Sydney’s victory with a clearly hampered shoulder.
