As one of the most dramatic finals series in A-League history approaches its conclusion, Perth Glory and Sydney FC will meet on Sunday at Optus Stadium to decide who will be crowned champion.

On Thursday’s episode of Game of Codes, we asked former Socceroo and Melbourne Victory legend Archie Thompson who he sees lifting the trophy on Sunday night and how the 2018/19 season has compared to those before it.

Listen to Archie Thompson on Game of Codes:

The 40-year-old, who sits 3rd on the A-League’s all-time scoring list with 90 goals, admitted that this grand final was incredibly hard to call, but was overawed by Sydney’s clinical demolition of his old side in the semi-final and gave them the slight edge.

With 35,000 tickets sold in the first hour of sale on Tuesday, this year’s A-League decider is a strong chance to beat the 55,436 grand final attendance record set at Docklands in 2007.

Perth will go into the match as favourites after winning their first ever Premier’s Plate and securing a home grand final, but Sydney will be buoyed by a dominant 6-1 defeat of Melbourne Victory in the semi-finals.

Conversely, Glory were pushed to the limit by the Reds on Friday night and only scraped through to the big dance on penalties. Will the best team of the season prevail, or can the visitors get the result away from home?
