The 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup is here. If you’re looking to watch one of the biggest women’s sporting events, check out The Roar’s full guide to live streaming the Matildas or watching them on TV.

The tournament will kick-off on Saturday, June 8 (Australian time) at 5am (AEST), when tournament hosts France tackle South Korea.

Australia’s first game is against Italy on Sunday, June 9 at 9pm (AEST).

The 24 nations are split into six groups of four. The Matildas are in Group C, alongside Brazil, Italy and Jamaica.

Teams play the other teams in their group once. The top two from each group are guaranteed progression to knockout stages, but only four of the six third-place sides will progress.

How to watch the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup on TV

Unfortunately, options for watching the Women’s World Cup are limited – both in terms of options and available matches.

The good news is that watching the World Cup on TV is free, with any televised matches being carried via free-to-air broadcaster SBS. The bad news, is they’ll only be showing Matildas matches, the tournament opener as far as group matches are concerned. They will, however, televise the quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-place play-off and grand final.

How to live stream the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup online

Fortunately, live streaming the Women’s World Cup is a hell of a lot easier.

If you’re after every match of the tournament, you’ll need to sign up to Optus Sport. Optus Sport is included in the mobile plan of Optus customers, with non-users needing to pay $15 a month for their sign-up package.

Their coverage will include both live streams and on-demand replays of every match of the tournament. You’ll also have access to highlights packages and other feature content similar to what they ran during the men’s World Cup last year.

SBS will be streaming the matches they have access to via The World Game arm of their website.

The Roar will, of course, have you covered throughout the tournament with live blogs, highlights and expert analysis of all the big matches – including all Matildas games.
