New South Wales fans had the most terrible nightmare last night. Oh, wait. It was true.

Nathan Cleary, who was already highly in doubt to actually play in Origin Game 3 with an ankle injury, was officially ruled out yesterday, meaning boogeyman halfback Mitchell Pearce earned a recall for Wednesday night’s decider.

With little halves support in the squad, an external replacement had to come in – but did it have to be Mitchell Pearce?

We were joined by Roar rugby league expert Tim Gore on the Game of Codes podcast to discuss Pearce’s controversial selection.

Listen to the discussion:

Pearce troubled career as Blues halfback has been a story in itself for several years, with the pain he’s inflicted on NSW fans over the years matched only by the sheer joy Queensland fans have felt deriding him and his fans.

In 18 State of Origin matches over seven series, Pearce has won just five while also losing all seven Game 3’s he’s played – six of which were deciders.

The only two series since 2010 that Pearce hasn’t played in, 2014 and 2018, are the only two series in that time the Blues have won.
