Star Perth Scorchers allrounder Mitch Marsh says he’s enjoying the freedom of not being captain after temporarily relinquishing the role at the start of the BBL season.
Marsh initially planned to hand over the captaincy to Ashton Turner for less than a handful of games in order to concentrate on his recovery from the serious ankle injury he picked up in the IPL.
But Marsh has enjoyed the freedom so much that he has decided to allow Turner to have the role for the rest of the BBL campaign.
The move has paid dividends, with Marsh scoring 172 runs at an average of 57.3 this BBL season.
Marsh plundered an unbeaten 57 from 27 balls in Wednesday’s crushing 86-run win over the ladder-leading Sydney Sixers.
The 29-year-old is yet to consider what he plans to do about the role next season, but says he’s been enjoying his time away from the captaincy.
“I basically went to Vogesy (coach Adam Voges) a week out from the first game. At that stage I was probably a 30 per cent chance of playing,” Marsh said.
“It was going to take a lot of time and energy to make sure I got up for that first game, and I just basically said that I didn’t feel like I had the capacity to do that and to prepare as captain, because it takes a lot in this tournament.
“I knew I could lean on Ash. He’s a great team man, a great leader, and a great captain himself.
“It basically just went from that to enjoying just playing the game (without the captaincy for the rest of the season).
“As an allrounder it’s really hard at times to captain in this format. So I’m really happy with the decision, and AT is doing a great job for us.”
The Scorchers have won three games on the trot to rocket back into finals calculations.
AJ Tye (4-20) and Jhye Richardson (3-15) produced stunning bowling displays to help skittle the Sixers for just 97, while Marsh chipped in with the vital scalp of Jordan Silk for a golden duck.
The Scorchers will be back in action when they when they host the Sydney Thunder on Saturday.
