There are two meetings to look at on Saturday night, with Group 1 action in Melton plus races in Menangle.
Below are the best bets for the respective programs.
Best bet: Multi (Race 1, Number 5/Race 2, Number 1/Race 4, Number 3)
Multi these three up to win and you should get around $2.60 or $2.70, which looks good value. The first two are former Kiwis that make their Australian debut for Andy Gath and each looked outstanding in trials here earlier this week. Barring bad luck, they should win. The last leg is President Roydon, who looks destined for the top grade and has come back in super order. There is a bit of depth to this line-up, but he looks so progressive.
Next best: Race 6, Number 5, Tough Monarch
I’m surprised there is $5.50 or thereabouts available for him. I’m a huge fan of Majestic Man but he had two torrid runs in the Great Southern Star last week and there has to be a query on whether or he can back up. Tough Monarch won his heat, leading throughout, then drew poorly in the final and couldn’t figure. If this horse finds the front tonight he’ll take a power of beating.
Value: Race 7, Number 1, Larajay Macray
Double figures is more than acceptable for this mare, who is racing pretty well at the moment. This horse didn’t draw the best last time out at Shepparton but I liked the way she finished her race off. From the pole, this horse has enough gate speed to hold a forward and run quite a bold race at good odds.

Best bet: Race 6, Number 2, Expensive Ego
I am pretty keen on this four-year-old star to bounce back. Forget he went around in the Bonanza in Melton last start. This horse looked to be full of running but copped bad interference, which sealed his fate in a luckless run. This horse returns home and should have little trouble leading. From there, he’ll take a power of beating.
Next best: Race 4, Number 2, No Win No Feed
The price gap between Rocknroll Angel and this mare is far too great. I have No Win No Feed much closer in the market. She was good in defeat last time out, her first run since mid-December. She will hold the back of the favourite and from there, gets run of the race and is hard to beat.
Value: Race 1, Number 1, Team Of Starzzz
This is more of a 1×3 play at big odds. He’s ten years of age, but still looks to maintain a healthy zest for racing with good, solid efforts here in recent runs without winning. He lands leaders back from the pole and $5-plus for him to run top three is a fair enough price in what looks a competitive race.
