Coming off a thrashing in Game 1 of the 2021 State of Origin series, the Queensland Maroons take on the New South Wales Blues at their fortress looking to storm back into the contest.

Game 2 of the 2021 series is Queensland’s home fixture, and will be played at Suncorp Stadium at 7:50pm (AEST) on Sunday, June 27.

The Maroons couldn’t ask for a better venue with which to try and force a Game 3 decider. Their history at Lang Park is, as you’d expect, phenomenal. They hold a 37-19 record there, including a thrilling victory in last year’s must-win Game 3. The Blues have won just one of their past eight Origin matches at Suncorp – a 28-4 triumph in the 2017 series opener. They did, however, go on to lose that series, which won’t be an option should they salute this time around.

New South Wales 28 20
Queensland 20 39
Neutral 7 5

The moving of Game 1 from the MCG to Townsville’s Queensland Country Bank Stadium due to Melbourne’s COVID-19 outbreak was expected to benefit the Maroons, but the Blues simply dominated deep in enemy territory, the 50-6 thrashing their largest ever Origin win.

It means Townsville is now the only Origin venue in Queensland at which the Maroons have lost more times than they’ve won, holding a 2-0 record at the old QEII stadium in addition to their Lang Park dominance.

However, only two of the last six series have seen a team take an unassailable 2-0 lead; while the Blues haven’t clinched an Origin triumph at Suncorp Stadium since Game 3 of the 2005 series.

Even if the Maroons do win, though, they’ll have to defy history to take the series. The Blues have dominated at Stadium Australia, holding a 19-9 record at the venue. Their record in NSW is worsened by a 3-3 record at the SCG and a 6-8 record at the Sydney Football Stadium, neither of which have featured an Origin game since 1998.

When it comes to neutral grounds, the Blues have won four of five at the MCG, but have lost all three meetings at the Docklands Stadium. New South Wales have won the only Origin game played at each of Melbourne Olympic Park, Perth Stadium and Los Angeles (a Long Beach exhibition match back in 1987), but the Maroons took the honours at the Adelaide Oval’s first and only game in the 2020 series.
