The NRL integrity unit is investigating police reports that Cronulla Sharks’ Josh Dugan has breached the state’s COVID laws in Lithgow, NSW, according to a media report.

Dugan was fined $25,000 by the NRL for breaking its COVID protocols after visiting a restaurant last month.

The Daily Telegraph reported Saturday that police were patrolling Lithgow, 150km away from Dugan’s home, when they stopped a Jeep Cherokee at 11.30pm and spoke to Dugan, 31, and his passenger, a man aged 30.

“The men allegedly weren’t wearing masks and checks revealed they were from Gymea and Alexandria,” the Telegraph quoted a police spokesman as saying.

“The driver allegedly told police they were moving to the area and were going to feed animals, however later admitted they were heading to a friend’s house for the weekend.

“They were directed to return home. About 40 minutes later, officers detected the same vehicle travelling away from Sydney towards Yetholme. The men were stopped and again directed to return to their homes. Charges are expected to be laid.”

The Sharks were reportedly made aware of the incident on Saturday morning and contacted the integrity unit.

“I just want to say I’m sorry, it was an error in judgment,’’ Dugan was quoted as saying by the Telegraph.

“It’s been a difficult period for me personally and I’m putting my hand up on this one.

“I’ve had all the necessary testing done for Covid and I’ve come back negative.

“I’ll isolate and do everything that is asked of me.”

Dugan was left in Sydney for disciplinary reasons when the team was relocated to south-east Queensland for the final eight rounds.

His $800,000-a-year contract expires in October and won’t be renewed, the Telegraph reported.
