Past, present and future Tottenham players were centre stage as the January transfer window drew to a close.

With many of the bigger deals being structured as loans with an option to buy Spurs had committed the largest sum as the deadline approached, paying €19m ($A30m) for Uruguay midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, with a further €6m ($A10m) in potential add-ons.

The north London club also signed Juventus team-mate Dejan Kulusevski on an 18-month loan with a €35m ($A56m) permanent move triggered if certain objectives are met.

A trio of players left White Hart Lane on loan headed by record signing Tanguy Ndombele. He went to Lyon with an option to buy for €65m ($A103m) – an €11m ($A17m) profit despite three disappointing seasons at Spurs. Lyon also signed Romain Faivre from Brest for an initial €15m ($A24m).

Two other Spurs players went to Spanish clubs on loan. Giovani Lo Celso joined Villarreal and Bryan Gil, a €25m ($A40m) summer signing from Sevilla, went to Valencia.

Another Spurs midfielder, Dele Alli, made a permanent move to Everton, whose new manager Frank Lampard had already signed Donny van de Beek, from Manchester United on loan.

Former Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen confirmed his much-touted move to Brentford, signing to the end of the season.

Eriksen has not played since suffering a cardiac arrest in Denmark’s opening match of the European Championship against Finland in June but is set on playing the World Cup in November.

The 29-year-old Eriksen’s former club Inter Milan terminated his contract in December because the heart starter device that he had implanted is not permitted in Serie A. There are no such restrictions in England.

Newcastle made their fourth signing of the window with full-back Matt Targett arriving on loan from Aston Villa for the remainder of the season.

Eddie Howe had already recruited Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes. Brighton defender Dan Burn was also being lined up.

Wood’s replacement at Burnley is Wout Weghorst. The 6ft 6in striker signed from Wolfsburg for £12m ($A23m).

Weghorst, capped 12 times by Holland, scored 59 goals in 118 Bundesliga appearances. He said: “I think this move is a nice fit and we will have a nice future together.”

Wolfsburg responded by paying €12m ($A19m) to FC Copenhagen for Danish forward Jonas Wind and €5m ($A8m) to Union Berlin for veteran forward Max Kruse.

Manchester City completed the signing of River Plate’s Julian Alvarez for €17m ($A27m), but he will remain in Argentina on loan.

Juventus signed Swiss midfielder Denis Zakaria from Borussia Moenchengladbach for €5m ($A8m). Atalanta brought in Romania winger Valentin Mihaila from Parma on loan, with an option to make the deal permanent.
