The uncertainty over Justin Langer’s future as Australian coach will continue, with Cricket Australia to enter ‘confidential discussions’ with the cricket great.

An eight-hour meeting at CA’s Jolimont headquarters on Friday appeared set to decide the matter once and for all, after months of speculation and rumours of significant player unrest with Langer’s coaching style.

However, the sporting body is yet to confirm whether Langer’s contract will be extended, with CEO Nick Hockley confirming on Friday evening the saga will continue to drag on.

“Cricket Australia can confirm that the CA board met today and part of that meeting involved extensive discussions about men’s head coach Justin Langer’s contract,” Hockley said.

“We will now enter into confidential discussions with Justin and the outcome will be announced as soon as possible.

“We have no further comment until then.”

The Age cricket reporter Daniel Brettig confirmed that Langer will head home to Western Australia over the weekend.

Instead, Hockley confirmed the team’s tour of Pakistan in March and April of this year will go ahead – Australia’s first overseas Test tour since the 2019 Ashes, and first of Pakistan since 1998.

“I am delighted to confirm that the board have endorsed the upcoming men’s tour to Pakistan,” Hockley said.

“It is the first time in 24 years that we have toured Pakistan and my sincere thanks to the PCB, to respective governments, to the ACA, the players and all the staff for their support in facilitating this historic series.

“It is going to be a really important tour, not only for Australian cricket, but for world cricket.”

Whether Langer will be at the helm for that tour remains to be seen.

The delay means only one Ashes coach was left without a job on a tumultuous day in the cricket world, with England boss Chris Silverwood paying the price for the team’s dismal 4-0 Ashes series defeat.
