Parramatta are counting the cost of their win over Penrith after it was revealed that Mitchell Moses will miss the next month with a broken finger.
The halfback turned in perhaps his best performance of the year in the Eels’ victory last night but reports after the game suggest that he will now be absent for their run in to the finals after suffering a hand injury in the game.
Early reports are that Moses will miss four weeks, which includes clashes with finals rivals in Manly, South Sydney, Brisbane and Melboune, as well as against with the resurgent Bulldogs.
It has been a tough time of late for the halfback. Along with Parramatta’s rough trot on the field – ended last night – he was the subject of death threats in recent weeks and had to receive additional police protection.
Two teenagers were later contacted by NSW Police for their part in the affair and dealt with under the Young Offenders Act.
“I’m alright,” said Moses after the win over Penrith. “You’ve got to get on with it. It’s footy and it’s sad to see things like that happen around here. I have to move on with it and focus on the footy.
“Everyone looked after me with everything, it was handled pretty well. I don’t know what else has happened with it but the NRL and Parra were pretty good.
“It didn’t affect me much. You’ve got to move on with it and it’s obviously not a nice thing to happen, so you have to move on. My job is to play good footy for Parra and that’s all I can do.”
The injury not only comes at a terrible time for Parra’s top four ambitions: it comes just as Moses had hit top form.
“I’m not sure,” he said when asked if he agreed that it was his best performance of the year. “As a team we were pretty good, and even when they went to 12 men with 20 to go in the first half, we stayed calm, completed our sets, built pressure and knew points would come.
“We probably haven’t done that very well when they’ve gone to 12 men. That was pleasing.
“We’ve had a bit of an up and down season, with a lot of inconsistency, but when we have to get up for games we get up for games. It’s a bit weird and probably not good, it’s something that we need to fix up going on from here and be better.”
